Jackson 5
Začiatkom 60. rokov 20. storočia jeho starší bratia 
vystupovali v súrodeneckej skupine (Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon) a Michael sa k nim pridal v roku 1964. Onedlho sa stal ako vtedy najmladší člen lídrom skupiny The Jackson 5. Skupina prerazila v roku 1969 a prvú platňu vydala, keď mal Michael 12 rokov. Súčasne s tým odštartoval svoju sólovú kariéru. Prvým jeho hitom bola balada Got to Be There (1972), avšak prvým hitom č. 1 sa stala skladba Ben 5. augusta 1972 z rovnomenného albumu, z ktorej sa predalo viac ako 1 milión kópií. Naposledy s bratmi vystupoval v roku 1984 na svetovom turné Victory, v roku 2001 však ešte spoločne odspievali niekoľko hitov na koncerte usporiadanom na počesť Michaela (Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration 2001).
V roku 1978 Jackson debutoval aj vo filme, v muzikáli The Wiz (Čarodejník), kde hrala aj Diana Ross. Hral v ňom strašiaka. Vtedy sa spoznal s Quincy Jonesom.
Sólová kariéra
Quincy Jones sa stal jeho producentom na prvý sólový album roku 1979 Off the Wall (vydavateľstvo: Epic Records). Album mal veľký úspech na celom svete, obsadil 4 prvé miesta v rebríčkoch USA.
V roku 1982 Michael Jackson vydáva Thriller, najpredávanejší album na svete (predalo sa niečo okolo
108 000 000 kusov) na tomto albume sa stalo 7 piesní hitmi, ktoré opäť lámali rekordy. Michael mal originálne videoklipy, ktoré by sa dali nazvať aj krátkymi filmami, ktoré ešte zvyšovali kvalitu singlov. Spolupracoval na nich s najlepšími producentmi a režisérmi, vo videoklipoch využíval najnovšie technológie a špeciálne efekty. Pre klipy Billie Jean a Thriller použil umelecké efekty ako make-up skombinované s fantastickým tancom a choreografiou. Vyprodukoval tak 14-minútové video. Toto video sa stalo tiež najúspešnejšie predávaným videoklipom. Album Thriller je nielen najpredávanejší album všetkých čias (predalo sa niečo okolo 108 mil. kusov), ale aj prototypom dokonalého popového albumu. V roku 1983 predviedol svoj legendárny tanec Moonwalk na show "Motown in 25 years".
V roku 1984 Michael vyhral 8 cien Grammy, utvoril tým nový svetový rekord.
Nasledoval album Bad (1987; s viac ako 36 mil. predaných kusov) a Dangerous (1991; s viac ako 35 mil. predaných kusov), ktoré pre zmenu znamenali aj umelecký posun - 
predovšetkým album Dangerous, ktorý je najvýraznejším v novom hudobnom štýle tzv. - New Jack Swing. Nasledoval album HIStory (1995), ktorý je najpredávanejším dvojalbumom s celkovým predajom 47 miliónov kusov v dvojbalení, Blood on the Dance Floor (1997), ktorý je najpredávanejší remixový album s takmer 8 miliónmi predaných kusov) a album Invincible (2001) s predajnosťou 13 miliónov kusov. Jeho zatiaľ posledným albumom je reedícia 25 rokov starého albumu Thriller, kde sú pôvodné skladby upravené v spolupráci so súčasnými spevákmi. Od februára sa z tejto reedície predalo 2008 viac ako 2,2 miliónov kusov. Celkovo počas svojej sólo kariéry od roku 1970 predal Kráľ popu takmer 700 mil. nahrávok.
V roku 2009 sa Michael pripravoval na koncertné turné This is it, ktoré sa malo začať 13. júla.
